METUPUK’ Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign for October across the UK and on social media channels. Continuing the synergy with The Darker Side of Pink travelling campaign highlighting the 31 women a day who die of Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Our “WHO REALLY CARES?” Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign will be launched on the 1st of October 2024 for the whole of the month.

Specially targeted digital boards in bus shelters and impactful roadside locations across the major cities in the UK including London, Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Belfast. Social posts across the month will carry the strong WHO REALLY CARES branding.

“WHO REALLY CARES?” is a provocative digital and social campaign designed to raise awareness about the devastating impact of metasatic breast cancer (MBC). By using a seemingly apathetic question, the campaign aims to jolt the audience out of complacency and force them to confront the lack of attention this critical issue receives.

The unexpected use of a seemingly dismissive question disarms the audience, allowing them to be more receptive to the gravity of the situation. It serves as a call to action. Implicit in the question is the answer: We all should care!

The synergy with our ‘The Darker Side of Pink’ campaign will be clear to see.  The campaign was launched in Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2021 by METUPUK – the UK’s only patient advocacy group dedicated to Metastatic (Secondary) Breast Cancer (MBC) – to expose the thoughts and frustrations of living with the disease, which kills 31 women in the UK every day. It is the leading cause of death of women 35 – 64 in England (https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/health-professional/cancer-statistics/statistics-by-cancer-type/breast-cancer/incidence-invasive).

Each of the ‘Invisible Women’ show a QR code, which can be scanned to reveal videos telling the individual statements of 31 of the group’s advocates. During the short time the campaign has been running, seven of the women filmed back in September 2021 have sadly died – reinforcing the importance of the campaign.

This campaign started in North Allerton this year and will continue to travel to various areas in the UK so keep a check on our website as there will be updates where it will be travelling to so you can come and see the installation.

They Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, will also be attending a conference in Manchester on the 11th October, to support the work that we do with the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance and metastatic breast cancer to highlighting the importance of work that METUPUK do.

Founder of METUPUK, Jo Taylor, said: “Breast Cancer awareness month is hugely important and valuable to many women, but the uncomfortable truth is that metastatic breast cancer is incurable and killing almost 1,000 of our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends every month. It can’t be sugar-coated and is severely under-represented in the global conversation around breast cancer. We’re passionate about changing the narrative to ensure that every woman facing metastatic breast cancer is supported and valued.”

NOTE : MBC occurs when the cancer has travelled from the primary breast site through the blood or lymphatic system to a distant area of the body. When this happens, it becomes an incurable disease. Amongst those diagnosed with early-stage Breast Cancer, approximately 30% will go on to develop MBC.
